Maria is a woman in her late thirties, whose story could take place in any given period. Together with her husband, Heinz, and her bedridden father, Maria dwells in airless set of rooms. One morning, Maria receives a call from her neighbor Dieter. Mutually feeling distant from people, they fall helplessly in love. When Dieter asks Maria about her past, she runs away in dismay. Meanwhile, Heinz, digs out his wife’s secret when he is searching for hidden money for his gambling debts.
